Today we start our journey by driving along the lush green countryside of ‘Manali’ and head towards the ‘Rohtang Pass’ (3,978 Mts.). Few places on the Earth can mark so dramatic a change in landscape as the ‘Rohtang Pass’. As we move further towards ‘Darcha’, we see along the river many villages with Buddhist prayer flags and Stupa’s and the landscape also embodies a more desert look. As we leave ‘Darcha’ and move ahead, the landscape slowly changes its appearance and rocks assume human like forms. From here it is flat easy walk to the villages of ‘Lahaul’, ‘Chhika’ and ‘Rarik’. We also undertake another stretch of drive along the ‘River Barai Nallah’ to ‘Palahmo’. There is a small temple on the edge of a gorge dedicated to the local ‘Goddess Paldan Lahmo’. It feels wonderful to stand on top of the gorge and see the tremendous energy with which the water moves. We spend some time here and then later, cross a man made bridge and reach our camping site. Overnight in tented camp.

We would have to climb in high altitude conditions to reach a pure alpine region. The landscape around you is so stunningly beautiful, that you would be in awe of it. The entire region is surrounded by summits of over 6,000 mts. From here, we straightaway head towards our campsite of ‘Chumiknakpo’, or ‘Black Spring’. Overnight in tented camp.

The top lies exactly in the heart of the ‘Great Himalayas’, and so you would be surrounded by mountains and spectacular scenery. The other side of this is a completely different world, and this is the beginning of the mountain desert. In the local language ‘Zanskar’ means ‘White Copper’ and you would realize it as soon as you enter ‘Zanskar’, as to why it is named so. You would find a mammoth granite rock, magnificently standing in the middle of the Valley. Zanskar have a legend that this is not a sheer rock, instead a monastery, where monks live and pray. During the Tibetan New Year the lucky few can hear, low drumbeats and also see tiny lamps, glimpsing on the rock. This rock is also known as ‘Gumburangjon’, and it is at the foot of the rock, that our campsite is laid out. Overnight in tented camp.

From here we pass through quite a few more hamlets to get to ‘Purne’ - a small hamlet on top of a hill. It is a highly commercial centre in the middle of this isolated land, as a lot of trekkers rest here. There are a few houses which cater to the needs of the trekkers, and offer thirst quenchers and other necessities. Overnight in tented camp.
